Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 blasted its way into US cinemas, earning a record breaking $125.1 million in it’s opening weekend. It made history this week, winning the weekend box office for the best three-day opening weekend becoming the highest debut for the franchise so far.
The studio has estimated that the movie opened in 4,100 cinemas across North America, made $30,000 per cinema throughout the three day weekend. Part 2 of the blockbuster series hits cinemas in July next year (2011).
In the UK, the movie also smashed the weekend box office earning 17.5m GBP.
Josh Berger, President and Managing Director of Warner Bros. Entertainment UK, said, “The opening of this film has become an extraordinary worldwide event. These remarkable box office numbers are a testament to the talents of the filmmakers, cast and to the vision of J.K. Rowling, the creator of this magical world. We congratulate everyone involved in the film, all of whom share in this success.”
Looking at the other movies in the box office this weekend, Megamind came in a far second place this weekend with box office sales of $16.2 million, followed by Denzel Washington’s thriller, Unstoppable, which earned $13.1 million over the weekend.
Rounding out the top five movies for the weekend was Due Date that took in $6.8 million in fourth place, and Russell Crowe movie, The Next Three Days earned the same amount at $6.8 million.
