Dwayne Johnson

After fleeing Vince McMahon’s WWE in the mid-2000s, Johnson embarked on a movie campaign of action films (“Walking Tall,” “Doom”). Behind all those layers of brawn is an actor with great comic timing and the charming ability to make fun of himself. He stole scenes from John Travolta as a gay bodyguard in “Be Cool.” He out-Steve Carelled Steve Carell in “Get Smart.” And he’s committed himself to Disney on numerous occasions, most recently as “The Tooth Fairy.”

Now Dwane Johnson, stars in “Faster” and plays an ex-con released from prison after doing 10 years for being a driver in a heist. The only thing on his mind is hunting down the men that set him up and killed his brother. With help from Mike Epps, Johnson gets a list of the men who put him in prison and where they live. He stalks his prey and violently kills the first two men on the list before the police can figure out who he is. Billy Bob Thornton plays the veteran officer who tries to track down Johnson along with Spy Kids and Sin City alum Carla Gugino. Also standing in his way of vengeance is Oliver Jackson-Cohen, a hired hitman/internet entrepreneur who finds pleasure in the chase.

Despite its shortcomings, including a predictable plot twist, “Faster” isn’t the turkey you might expect it to be. Johnson, who no longer goes by The Rock moniker, seems at home in his return to more-adult action fare, and Thornton and Gugino are quite good as the cops hot on the case. And “Oz” star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje shares a memorable waterfront encounter with Johnson during the film’s tension-filled final act.
